Hang gliding for Self Magazine Feb. 13,1999

My old hang gliding instructor called me up one day and said "Katy, wanna hang glide in a dress? " I'm pretty gullible so I warily dialed the number he'd given me for the local Self magazine contact. A week later I launched off the cliffs of Torrey Pines in a frock along with Brittany, another female pilot.

They photography crew was quite cosmopolitan. The art director was from New York, the photographer from Norway, the assistant photographer from LA. We all got along quite well, despite the shoot lasting three days instead of the one. Rod, (our hang gliding guru/ control tower) was rumored to have gotten his wind dances mixed up. Me in one of the "costumes" whipped together by the wardrobe crew. We hung from the hang gliding simulator to test how the outfits would look over the harnesses we'd wear during the shoot. They straightened my hair too. Weird. This is Brittany, a stunning hang gliding pilot in green satin.
Brittany, in brat mode. Me at the launch point. Airborne  Incoming! Brittany dive bombing Rod.
My Mary Poppins impression. The whole crew.
